Idols

This ongoing collection of idols represent both personal mythology and the overlapping folklore of the communities I've lived in. Drawing inspiration from artists like Jane Alexander and Ayana V. Jackson, as well as from the flora and fauna of South Africa, these ritual idols are created with the purpose of consecrating the space they occupy. They're meant to transform ordinary surfaces into altars, inviting their viewer to meditate on their relationship with locality.

Ritual Idol of an Eland

2024

Eland have historically been revered by the San as a creature of immense spiritual power. In a modern context, the eland, for me, has come to represent an invitation for the viewer to connect with the history of the land they occupy, to meditate on both the beauty and violence, and to consider their place within that context.

Ritual Idol of a Kudu

2025

Kudu have been seen across many cultures in South Africa as a symbol of strength and endurance. Similar to the eland, the image of the kudu has persisted throughout history as an important messenger. Today, the message is one about our relationship to the natural world and how we can better pay homage to the ways it support us.
